SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is the technique used by search engine optimizer to get traffic from search engines. Now it has become a popular phrase around the web. Since search engines are the first step to receive traffic, those who are new to this term initially get confuse. If you are new to the online marketing industry, you may be thinking what is search engine? This is a tool where you can search for information, products or services using keywords.

Search engines have their own database consisting of various keywords. When you search for information on web, usually you are provided with a list of several links which are related to your query. This is usually in the form of HTML web page. These HTML pages are the basic tools which every search engine uses to get the information you seek. For example you may be looking for information on marketing. Then, search engine will provides a link with your query. It may vary from one search engine to another but they all provide the same result. The search engine will index the HTML page and then it will determine what search term you entered. Now, understand that this process is not a automated process. Real people used to visit the search engines and type the keywords. But now, virtually everyone can find the information on the internet. All you need is the right tools.

So what are these tools? In the early days of the internet, the tools were text-driven. Search engines used to search the entire internet for your search term. Today, search engines are term spaced. They attempt to index the entire internet. Some of the popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, and MSN. How do search engines work? They attempt to find a solution to the query by crawling the web. Unfortunately, search engines are not smart like humans. As a matter of fact, search engines have sometimes been shown to be less useful than using the competing Google Brain Server. In other words, some search engines are not very precise or understandable. A given search engine may index 100 pages today, but for anyone in search, it may be possible that only 10 will be indexed by the next general search engine. This indicates a 100% coverage of the web. However, what does this mean to you? Well, it means that as you learn which search engines are good at what they do best, you should learn to maximize your search engine optimization potential with search engines.
